How to Choose a Domain Name

How to Choose a Domain Name

A domain name is an address for your business website, for instance: www.yourcompany.com. Choosing the perfect domain name for your business should not be taken lightly. Your choice of a domain name could have impacts that you didn’t even think about when buying one, so knowing what to look out for is important. This blog will give you the lowdown on what you need to know and what to look out for when choosing a domain for your business.

How to Choose a Domain Name

Keep It Relevant

Ideally, you want your domain name to feature your business name or at the very least as close to it or your services as possible. For instance, if your name is Professional Cleaners and you are based in London, something like procleanlondon would be ideal.

Keep it Short

Put yourself in a customers perspective. Can you remember big long web addresses? Probably not, keeping it short and to the point is critical for memorability and ease of use; this is why some of the most popular domain names in the world are only 4 letters long!

What About TLD’s?

TLD stands for top-level domain, and simply put, it is the ending of the domain – so .co.uk or .com or any other format. There only used to be country-level TLDs and a few others; now, you can almost have any you like from .coffee to .agency and .network etc. Our advice is to always check to see if the .com and .co.uk are available first as 99% of your audience will default to typing one of these – and if your competitors have that domain – you will be losing customers.

Top Tip: Always buy both the .co.uk and .com domains when buying yours – it helps protect your brand name from hijack. You can always forward one to the other so that anyone typing them always lands on your site.

Quick-fire Top Tips For Buying A Domain

  1. Buy it quick – see one you like for your business? Snap it up!
  2. Avoid hyphens – people, as a rule, always forget them!
  3. Keep it as close to your brand as possible.
  4. Look for common misspellings in your domain and secure the relevant domain too!
  5. Remember TLDs – .co.uk and .com over any other!
  6. Keep it short – it is not war and peace!
  7. Make it memorable.
  8. Avoid complex words
